Mr. Nelson’s United States History Disclosure
Welcome to Mr. Nelson’s class. I am very excited to have you in my class and am looking forward to a great year with you. During class we will be implementing the Eight expectations for living; in our school. (see below). This will keep our classroom a healthy learning environment. In addition, in accordance with expectation eight, we will daily recite a life principle. Once again, this will contribute to a healthy learning environment. My deep hope is that every student who leaves my class will be a better person because of it.
Eight Expectations for Living
Required Materials
-Pen
-Pencil
-Two Notebooks
-Planner
Attendance:
Attendance is very important. Being in class will maximize learning opportunities. (For more information see the handbook.)
Phones and Electronics
Don’t worry about taking these out, we will not be using them in class.
Bullying
There is a zero-tolerance policy for bullying.
Starters: Everyday as you come into class it is expected that you will, sit down, stop all conversation, and answer the prompt on the board. Each starter question needs to have a 3-5 sentence response in your notebook. Label your answer with the title and number of each prompt. Once finished remain quiet so that others can finish.
Quotes : Following the starter, it is expected that you will stand and recite the quote we are memorizing for the month. We will do this as a class.
17 Life Principles: Following the quote it is expected you will sit down and recite the weekly Life principle quote.
Closers: Each day at the end of class we will have a closer. This involves writing a part of your own personal history in your journal notebook. If so desired feel free to bring any kind of notebook for this. However, any notebook will be fine. Closers will only be done in pen, as it is necessary to preserve them.
Projects: There will be multiple projects throughout this course. I have found that in my own education I have learned the most from projects and teaching. As a result, we will do teaching projects throughout this course. In other words, we will do projects and then teach each other what we have learned.
Course Description: We will study the geography, history, and government/laws of Utah. Everything that we study will have the goal of preparing students to be good, well-educated citizens of this country.
Expectations:
Come to class with all required materials, be respectful to everyone, participate, work hard, and have a good attitude!
Misbehavior:
I believe students are wonderful. I am grateful for the creative energy they bring to class. That being said, sometimes students forget to channel their creative energy. If this happens, below is a list of how misbehavior will be handled in class. For each time a misbehavior is repeated the student will move up one stage. (Depending on the misbehavior, stages can be skipped.) I would like to emphasize that this is all intended to reform behavior, and better the student.
Stage 1: I tell you to stop and give you the opportunity to figure out what you should have done instead.
Stage 2: Level Seating change: You get to sit close to the teacher’s desk. You get to write a paragraph on what you were doing incorrectly.
Stage 3: Put your name on the board. You need to see me at the end of class.
Stage 4: Crossover classroom. (Petroff, 2nd grade).
Stage 5: Contact parents, possible detention.
Level 2+: Administration.
Retry Policy: I believe in a policy of correcting failures rather than accepting them. As a result, students are free to retry anything we do in this class. Any redone work will not be graded with a late penalty. However, I strongly suggest keeping up with class. There will be a large amount of in-class work that will be very difficult to make up near the end of this course.
Grading Scale:
